Title change...due to availability, we will be postponing our reading of An American Marriage until a future month. If you've already read it, don't worry you'll be ahead!
We will now be reading Exit West by Mohsin Hamid, a brief, astonishingly visionary love story that imagines the forces that drive ordinary people from their homes into the uncertain embrace of new lands. In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people meet--sensual, independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. When the unrest in the city explodes, turning familiar streets into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts, they begin to hear whispers about doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. Hamid's use of magical realism of spontaneously-appearing doors functions like magic carpets of old Arabic tales. As the violence escalates, Nadia and Saeed leave their homeland and old lives behind, stepping through a door...Exit West follows these remarkable characters as they emerge into an alien and uncertain future, struggling to hold on to each other, their past, and the very sense of who they are. Hamid has said that in a sense we are all refugees, and it's easy to sympathize with this story even if you have not been forced to leave your home and family far behind. Profoundly intimate and powerfully inventive, this novel tells an unforgettable story of love, loyalty, and courage that is both completely out of our time and for all time.
