What do I need to get started?
- Both the Nook & Sony eReaders work well with PCs and Macs.
- Every user will need Adobe Digital Editions software
and an Adobe ID to transfer the eBooks to their portable eReader. - The eReader must be authenticated with the same user ID as the computer used to transfer the eBook.
- If the Adobe Digital Editions software does not automatically detect your eReader to authorize it, close Adobe Digital Editions and disconnect your eReader. Reopen Adobe Digital Editions and connect the eReader.
- Adobe allows six devices (computers/eReaders) to use the same Adobe ID at once.
- To deauthorize a computer (from your Adobe account, using Adobe Digital Editions): Ctrl-Shift-D while in Adobe Digital Editions.
- To deauthorize an eReader (from your Adobe account, using Adobe Digital Editions): Ctrl-Shift-E while in Adobe Digital Editions.
- View all eBooks on Overdrive.
- See "How to" slideshows.
What eReader Devices are compatible with Overdrive?
Visit the Overdrive site for the latest information about compatible devices, which includes a listing of all of the compatible devices with links to the product pages.
How do I use the Sony eReader to download the library's ebooks?
- To operate, the Sony eReader requires the Sony eReader Library software that ships with the device, as well as Adobe Digital Editions software.
- When downloading a recently checked out eBook, “open” the file with eReader Library. It will automatically be transferred to the eReader, if it is connected to your PC. If the eReader is not connected to your PC, you can later transfer it to your PC by using the "Sync" function in the Sony eReader Library. Just click on the "Sync" icon found in the left panel where the device's library is displayed.
- To return an eBook early, with your eReader plugged into the computer, go into Sony's eReader Library, right-click on the title and select return borrowed title.
How do I use the Nook to download the library's ebooks?
- Basic requirements include (a) B&N account, (b) credit card to activate the account, (c) Adobe Digital Editions software installed on computer.
- Once Adobe Editions is installed, users will be prompted to enter their Adobe account information or set up a new Adobe account.
- The Nook only requires Adobe Digital Editions software to transfer eBooks, downloaded from the Overdrive site, from the computer to the device.
- After checking out an eBook on Overdrive, users must then open the file with the Adobe Digital Editions software to manage the transfer and/or create a library.
- To transfer the eBook title to the Nook, click, hold and drag the title to the "Nook bookshelf" as shown on the left panel of Adobe Digital Editions window.
- When downloading a recently checked out eBook: a) Open the file with Adobe Digital Editions, b) Drag and drop the eBook from the center section of Adobe Digital Editions to your Nook, which should be listed on the left sidebar of Adobe Digital Editions.
- Note: It is not necessary to deauthenticate a Nook.
Troubleshooting tips:
If Adobe Digital Editions doesn't recognize that you have a new eReader to authenticate, unmount and unplug the eReader, restart Adobe Digital Editions, and plug the eReader back in. It should find the eReader and ask to authenticate it.
When you authenticate a device with a new Adobe ID, it deauthenticates whatever ID was already active for the device. When that happens, any ebooks that were active for the old account are no longer available (it says "User not activated").
If you plug your Nook into a computer that has been authenticated with a different Adobe ID, it will ask you if you want to authenticate your Nook with the new ID.
Alternatively, you can follow these steps if you receive the message "User not activated": (a) Close ADE if it is open. (b) Connect the Nook to the computer and open the My Computer folder from the desktop or the Start menu. (c) Right-click on the Nook and select, "Explore." (d) Find the folder '.adobe-digital-editions.' It contains one small XML file. (e) Delete the folder, and therefore the file within. (f) Unplug the Nook. (g) Finally, open ADE, and plug-in the nook. (h) Reauthorize the device.
